| Wednesday, May 28, 2008 Four Lady Jays, one Lady Crusader receive Region soccer recognition By the News Tribune staff Mariah McClain and Emily Downing of the Jefferson City Lady Jays were named Central Region Player of the Year at their respective positions in voting by girls soccer coaches. McClain, a junior, was named Goalkeeper of the Year. In 23 games this season, McClain allowed just 20 goals (0.87 avg.) while posting 12 shutouts. (Stephen Brooks/News Tribune photo) Downing, a senior, was named the Defensive Player of the Year. She played a key role on the back line for the Lady Jays, who allowed just two goals in their final 10 regular-season and two district tournament contests. In addition, Matt Stacey of Jefferson City was selected as Coach of the Year. In his first season as head coach, Stacey led the Lady Jays (13-9-1) to their first district tournament title since 2005. Two other Lady Jays were selected to the Central Region squad. Katie Denning, a senior, was named as a midfielder. Denning provided a strong presence on the defensive side of the ball while scoring three goals and dishing out one assist. Kelsey Sanders, a senior, was named as a forward. Sanders led the Lady Jays in scoring this season, totaling nine goals, including four game-winners. She also had four assists and racked up 22 points. The four Lady Jays on the team was the most of any school. Melissa Young of the Helias Lady Crusaders was named to the Central Region team as a midfielder. The senior paced the Lady Crusaders (10-9-1) in scoring this season with nine goals and three assists for a total of 21 points. Central Region selections are eligible to be named to the Missouri High School Coaches Association's All-State team that will be released next month. The four Lady Jays were joined by teammate Katie Evers as first-team all-district selections. Evers is a sophomore defender. In addition to Young, two Lady Crusaders were named to the all-district first-team. Danielle Baumgartner, a junior midfielder, and senior defender Caty Newbold were selected by the coaches.
