From Springfield Soccer GK – Annie Streumph (Helias) D – Liz Gayer (Hickman), Caty Newbold (Helias), Jeanna Ross (RB), Caitlyn Guerrant (Fulton), MF – Alex Litofsky (RB), Shawn Beard (Moberly), Melissa Young (Helias), Latea LaRue (Camdenton), Sarah Hotop (Mexico), Tillie Bill (SBC) F – Kelsey Sanders (JC), Ashley Russell (Fulton), Lauren Kelly (RB), Andie Wiesner (Moberly) Honorable Mention: Blaire Baker (Camdenton), Danielle Baumgartner (Helias), Molly Cowley (JC) Class 2 District 10 Preview: The Class 2 District 10 race has arguably been the most competitive in the state and this year will be no different as each of the six teams can make a significant run at a district title. One thing that should make this district interesting – three first-year coaches and one second-year coach out of the six district teams. The District 10 winner will more than likely play state power Incarnate Word Academy in a sectional game this May. IWA won its district last year in record-setting fashion – 15-0 over Gateway – en route to a second place finish in Class 2. Incarnate returns two of the top players in the nation and was ranked nationally for the majority of 2007. The Rock Bridge Bruins are defending District champions. 1. Rock Bridge (11-7-5) 2. Helias (12-6) 3. Jefferson City (17-5-2) 4. Hickman (8-11-4) 5. Smith-Cotton (14-7-2) 6. Camdenton (12-12) |

| Portrait: Matt Stacey is new head coach for Lady Jays soccer team
By Tom Rackers News Tribune , March 31, 2008 The waiting game is over for Matt Stacey. “I've just been waiting for it come, waiting for it to come, waiting for it to come,” Stacey said. “Our theme this year is ‘Prepare' and I've had a lot of time to prepare myself.” Stacey took over this season as the head coach of the Jefferson City Lady Jays soccer team after serving as an assistant for both the boys and girls squads since 2002. “There's always anxiety and apprehension with any new job,” he said. “But with the experience I've had as an assistant and seeing how it's done from all different angles, I believe this is a good time for me to be a head coach.” Stacey was named to the position last summer, which gave him a lot of time to prepare. “In the boys season (played last fall), I paid more attention to the little details,” Stacey said. “Things like when to add things to practice, when this decision and that decision need to be made. As an assistant, you kind of take those things for granted.” The move up the ladder has meant more off-field work. “But the soccer's the same,” Stacey said. “It's just the light is shining on me a lot more now than it used to be.” Stacey played club and high school soccer while growing up in St. Joseph. He then went to Central Methodist, where he was a team captain. He was a goalkeeper his entire playing career. “That's where it's at,” Stacey said with a smile. After serving as a student assistant for a year at Central Methodist, Stacey came to Jefferson City immediately after graduation. “I knew I wanted to coach and they had a coaching position and a seventh-grade science position open,” Stacey said. He also knew about Jefferson City though some of his college teammates, who were former Jays. “I knew all about Jay Pride before I got here,” Stacey said. “Although I'm not a Jay through birth, I am proud to be part of the Jefferson City program. “It grows on you quickly. You get immersed into it.” Stacey teaches at Lewis and Clark Middle School, which means he doesn't have a chance to see his players during the school day. “That makes things a little difficult,” Stacey said. “Being so involved at Lewis and Clark, I forget sometimes that the high school has different activities going on.” But two of his assistants are at the high school, and Stacey isn't looking to move. “(Lewis and Clark) is a great school filled with great staff and great kids; I wouldn't want to change anything,” Stacey said. With his new responsibilities, Stacey has had to make one change. He had been goalkeeper coach for the men's program at Columbia College for three years before resigning to give his full attention to new job. “I loved it there, but high school is my first responsibility,” Stacey said. Stacey said he feels fortunate to have had a lot of mentors in Jefferson City boys head coach Eddie Horn, former Jefferson City girls coach Chris Miller and John Klein, the men's head coach at Columbia College. “I've learned a lot from all of them,” he said. “I think they all had a hand in getting me prepared for this job.” Stacey believes he is up to the challenge. “I don't think I could be with a better program or a better school,” he said. “Jefferson City does such a great job of supporting high school athletics and the school has such a great winning tradition. “I hope to be able to help carry that on.” |

| Bruins struggle to find scoring
Rock Bridge can’t capitalize in Jeff City. By RYAN NILSSON of the Columbiq Tribune April 22, 2008 JEFFERSON CITY - The Rock Bridge girls soccer team had so many chances to score during last night’s game against Jefferson City, it’s difficult to single out one as being the best. The Jays had a couple of quality scoring chances. To say they had more than a few might be pushing it. But in soccer, neither the quantity nor the quality of a team’s scoring chances matters. All that counts is how many chances are finished. The Bruins missed every one of their opportunities while Jefferson City capitalized to win 2-0 last night at the 179 Soccer Park. "This isn’t a game we should have lost," Rock Bridge Coach Kelly Gates said. "We’ve been playing against the top teams in the state at their level, and we came out and lost a game we should have won." Saturday, the Bruins (2-10) lost 3-0 to Notre Dame de Sion, the fifth-ranked team in the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Class 1 poll. St. Teresa’s Academy, the fourth-ranked Class 2 team, defeated Rock Bridge 4-0 later in the day. Gates juggled the Bruins’ lineup in an attempt to find combinations of players that work well together, and despite missing four starters because of injuries - Kayla Hauck, Sarah Humphrey, Alex Litofsky and Claire Schaeperkoetter - it worked well. About 10 minutes into the game, Lauren Kelly sent a cross in from the left side, but the ball sailed across the goalmouth because no Rock Bridge player was there to knock it in. A little more than 10 minutes later, Gabe Dobbins crossed the ball to Kelly in the center of Jefferson City’s box, but her shot missed wide right. Kelsey Eckenrode crossed the ball to Kelly at the near post with about three minutes to play in the first half, and her shot hit the side netting. "The first half we were getting too excited … in front of the goal," said Eckenrode. "That really hasn’t been the case lately. We just seem to be in a drought." With less than two minutes to play before halftime, Jefferson City goalkeeper Mariah McClain dove to her right and made a great save on Kelly’s shot from the top of Jays’ box. One of the Bruins’ final chances came in the 54th minute when Lauren Meyer crossed the ball into the Jays’ penalty box from the right side. A Jefferson City defender attempted to clear the ball, but she didn’t get much on the ball and wound up passing it right to Jenna Ross. The Bruins senior managed a weak shot from inside the box right at another Jays defender. "It was just really frustrating," Rock Bridge junior Rachel Rutter said. "I mean we all were out there working hard. It was just one of those games where nothing would come together for us." Credit for that goes to the Jefferson City defense. The Jays (8-6-1) were physical with the Bruins attackers and got numbers behind the ball all game. "When a team is knocking the ball around as much as they were in the first half, that’s what you’ve got to do," Jefferson City Coach Matt Stacey said. "I think you’ve got to stay structured and you’ve got to stay organized. And when you get that opportunity when you do win the ball, you’ve got to look for the quick outlet." That’s how the Jays scored their second goal. On a quick counter attack in the 55th minute, Kelsey Sanders played the ball out wide to Taylor Looten. The junior dribbled down the left side of the field on a breakaway and hit a well-struck ball inside the far post. Sanders also got the assist on the Jays’ first goal. In about the 30th minute, she passed to Kelly Strope in the box and the sophomore forward beat Rock Bridge goalkeeper Carrie Levy far post. "We just need more practice time to work on finishing and just finishing off of crosses and finishing when you have the ball at your feet in front of the goal," Rutter said. |
| Team defense leads Lady Jays past Rock Bridge
April 22, 2008 By Tom Rackers , News Tribune Under pressure, the Jefferson City Lady Jays kept their wits about them. And it paid off in the end. “It wasn't like we were great at possessing the ball or dictating the pace of the game,” Lady Jays coach Matt Stacey said after Jefferson City blanked Rock Bridge 2-0 on Monday night at the 179 Soccer Park. “But we did a great job of keeping our defensive formation together and not getting strung out and giving them a lot of easy opportunities.” Trailing 1-0 at intermission, Rock Bridge turned up the offensive pressure in the second half. The Bruins spent much of the final 40 minutes on the attack, but were turned back time after time by Lady Jays keeper Mariah McClain and the Jefferson City backs for the team's fifth consecutive shutout. “Our backs are playing well,” Stacey said. “We did a good job of staying structured back there, staying organized. And when they did get it inside, we were able to quickly get it out of there.” That paid off with an insurance goal midway through the second half. Kelsey Sanders of the Lady Jays cleared the ball to a streaking Taylor Looten down the left side. The junior was able to settle it behind the Bruin defense, then took a quick shot with her left foot into the far side of the net. “Taylor recognized it and got through,” Stacey said. “You can't ask for a better finish. That was perfect placement.” The Lady Jays took a 1-0 lead with about 12 minutes to go in the first half. Kelly Strope found herself open in front of the Bruin net after a Sanders pass and knocked it home for the score. “We capitalized on the chances they gave us,” Stacey said. The Lady Jays (8-6-1) were wary heading into the game against the Bruins (2-10). “Their record doesn't show it right now, but I think they're the most dangerous two-win team around,” Stacey said. “They play a tough, tough schedule and they're hungry for wins. “We had to be ready to play.” In the JV game, the Lady Jays (5-3-1) dropped a 2-0 decision to the Lady Bruins. |
