Lady Jays need penalty kicks to top Lady Crusaders

By the News Tribune staff
SEDALIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Lady Jays and the Helias Lady Crusaders worked overtime Tuesday night in the Class 2 District 10 Soccer Tournament.

It wasn't a surprise.

“It always goes back to the great rivalry that we have,” Lady Jays coach Matt Stacey said after Jefferson City edged Helias 2-1 in penalty kicks in the tournament semifinals at Susie Ditzfeld Field.

The Lady Jays took the lead in the first half on a goal by Kelly Strope. Helias came back to tie it with about 15 minutes left in regulation on a goal by Caitin Dulle.

The first 15-minute overtime was scoreless, as was the second. So it was off to penalty kicks to decide the winner.

“Both overtimes were equally well-played,” Stacey said. “We both had some quality chances.”

Lady Jays goalkeeper Mariah McClain made a great save in the second overtime to send the contest to PKs.

“Helias had a breakaway that Mariah stopped, then the ball popped out before she hopped back on it,” Stacey said.

After the first set of five shooters for each team, it was tied at 4. Katie Evers then scored for the Lady Jays before Helias' next shot went off the post to end the game.

“PK's aren't the best way to decide a game, but in a tournament situation like this, you have to get a winner,” Stacey said. “Helias played great, but at this time of the year, you'll take a win any way you can get it.”

Said Helias coach Matt Hicks: “There's may different ways you can look at that (penalty kicks), but the game's got to be ended sooner or later. The girls couldn't play all night.”

The Lady Crusaders end the season at 10-9-1.

“We made some big strides, and we had some bigger goals, but for our team to get that far and to lose like that, I'm proud of what we did,” Hicks said. “It's a tough way to lose, but that's about as close as you can get to a win without winning.”

The Lady Jays (12-8-1) will face either second-seeded Sedalia Smith-Cotton or third-seeded Hickman for the championship. The Sedalia-Hickman semifinal was halted due to lightning early in the first half Tuesday night and has tentatively been rescheduled for Wednesday. The championship is slated for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
