| Friday, May 16, 2008 Lady Jays claim soccer district crown By the News Tribune staff Goal in second half lifts Jefferson City past Sedalia S-C SEDALIA, Mo. - It's been preached almost since the first day of practice by Matt Stacey - to win a district soccer title, you have to learn how to win 1-0. “I guess I was kind of prophetic,” the Lady Jays coach said after Jefferson City blanked the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers 1-0 to capture the Class 2 District 10 title Thursday night at Susie Ditzfeld Field. With the win, the Lady Jays (13-8-1) advance to take on Incarnate Word Academy (17-2-1) in the sectional at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Hickman High School. The game's lone goal came midway through the second half. Kelly Strope knocked the ball to Kelsey Sanders, who lofted a shot toward the net. The ball deflected off the hands of the Lady Tigers goalkeeper and crossed the goal line for the score. “It was an out-and-out battle,” Stacey said. “We both wanted to win it bad. We knew it was going to be a true test on their home field, but the girls stayed on track.” Mariah McClain got the shutout in goal for the Lady Jays. “She made a couple of big saves, but most of their dangerous chances went wide of the goal,” Stacey said. “They outshot us, but because our defense was playing so well, they weren't getting much in front of the net.” Stacey credited Katie Evers, Abby Campbell, Kelsey Coffman and Emily Downing, among others, for big games defensively. The Lady Tigers had a corner kick opportunity in the final minute, but were turned away. “That made things interesting,” Stacey said. |
