GIRLS SOCCER: BI-STATE SHOOTOUT
Jefferson City shuts out Hazelwood West

SUBURBAN JOURNALS

The Jefferson City girls soccer team made the most of what it was given during Saturday afternoon’s game with Hazelwood West as part of the 12th annual
Bi-State Shootout at SportPort in Maryland Heights.

The Jays managed just two shots on goal and still defeated the Wildcats 2-0 as West’s possession offense did everything it was supposed to do, except find the back of the net.

“They had two shots on goal and two goals, and that’s all that matters,” West coach Jason Sellers said. “They literally had two shots on goal and that’s all.” While West couldn’t get the best of Jays junior keeper Mariah McClain, Jefferson City tallied one goal in each half to earn the win.

Jefferson City went up 1-0 when Jays sophomore forward Kara Steiner finished off a set play when she sent a shot past West junior keeper Amber Koeller
exactly 19 minutes into the game.

“We got a cross off, and I came in off the back post and chipped it into the far corner,” Steiner said. “It gives you a comfort zone. Especially after what
happened to us last night (in Jefferson City’s 3-0 loss to Granite City).”

The Jays (1-1-0) got a second tally when sophomore midfielder Kinsey Shouse rocketed a shot over West sophomore keeper Katie Snow at the 14:27 mark of the second half to make the score 2-0.

The shot by Shouse made her coach a happy man.

“She just hit a bomb really,” Jefferson City coach Matt Stacy said. “It was a great shot. The opportunity’s there, take it. If you don’t, you’re not going to
score. She took that chance and she scored.”

While Jefferson City made good on its tries, McClain and the Jays’ defense stonewalled West.

The ’Cats (0-1-1) had one really good chance in each half and couldn’t convert.

In the first half, at the 22:37 mark, West senior midfielder Jesa Jenkins sent a ball into the Jays penalty area, where sophomore forward Kaylee Oesch was
waiting. Oesch sent a screamer toward the Jefferson City net only to see McClain gobble it up.

Then, Jenkins sent her own screamer on net at the 13:31 mark of the second half only to have McClain make a carbon-copy save of Oesch’s point-blank effort.

“I thought our girls did a pretty good job of holding our shape together and taking care of things in the back,” Stacy said. “The second half, I think
Hazelwood West was definitely the better team. They controlled the half, and we were just fortunate to make good on the chances we got.”

One person who agreed wholeheartedly with Stacy’s assessment was Sellers.

While he was happy with the final 40 minutes of play, he said he just wished his team could have played an entire 80 minutes the way it finished up.

“Definitely,” Sellers said. “If we play the way we played the second half over the entire game, this probably would have been a different outcome. That half was night and day from the first. It was good to see.”

West (0-2-1) then finished up the event with a 1-0 loss to eventual Black Division champion Granite City (Ill.) Saturday night.
