First half lead slips away from Soccer Lady Lakers
Camdenton Lake Sun

With a lead against Jefferson City for the first time ever, Camdenton M Latea LaRue (20) heads the ball past a defender Tuesday in the first half. The Lady Jays came back in the second half to win 2-1.
CAMDENTON - The Soccer Lady Lakers let their first-ever lead on Jefferson City slip away Tuesday.

Camdenton led 1-0 at halftime, but the Lady Jays got two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half from M Katie Denning and the Lady Lakers dropped their season and home opener 2-1. Both of Denning's goals were from about 25 yards out off long passes to the middle of the field from the edge.

'The bottom line is Jefferson City is just loaded,' said Camdenton coach J.D. Hunter. 'They are fast up front and they've got about four or five girls that can find the back of the net. I thought we did a nice job on four of them, just not on the Denning girl.'   Before Tuesday's match, in Camdenton's 11 seasons of girls soccer, the Lady Lakers had never led Jefferson City in six matches. In fact, they had scored just one goal ever against Jefferson City and were coming off of a 6-0 loss last seasn to the Lady Jays, who return their entire starting offense.

'They had the same girls up front they had last year on us and we cut their goals down to two,' Hunter said. Camdenton F Megan Manzer gave the Lady Lakers their first lead on the Lady Jays 12 minutes into the season with a goal, shot from the middle of the Jefferson City 18-yard box that was assisted by M Latea LaRue on a header. 'I settled it ... and shot it,' Manzer said. 'It felt wonderful. It was not expected. We just came out really fired up.'

The Lady Lakers (0-1) were able to open the match by executing their game plan. 'For not having played because of the weather, for us to actually get out there and do it the way we had drawn it up just 10 or 15 minutes before the game started, I thought was exceptional,' Hunter said. 'I was real pleased with their efforts. It blew me put of the water. Shoot, last year at five minutes in, it was already 1-0 against us.'

But Camdenton missed an excellent scoring opportunity in the opening minute of play as the ball trickled across the mouth of the goal and no one was able to boot it into the net. 'I thought we had some opportunities on some free kicks that we muffed and I thought we had some opportunities inside the 18 and it came down to which foot we were going to settle (the ball) with,' Hunter said. 'I think those things are all correctable.'

Camdenton's early offensive success, however, was no fluke and just over 10 minutes later, Manzer made a goal stick. Manzer gave Hunter the credit for the early offensive success. 'For our first game, it feels good to feel confident and look that good,' Manzer said. 'We just did what Hunter told us to do. He pretty much gave us our game plan, we followed it and it worked.' Jefferson City was able to make the necessary adjustments and exploited weaknesses in Camdenton's defense in the second half. 'They started making transitions in the first half,' Hunter said. '(They) were trying to get the ball wider and ... trying to stretch us out more. 'It just came to us lunging a little bit and biting on the outside and then we didn't get the center of the field marked very well.'

The Lady Jays outshot Camdenton 12-5 in the contest.   Jefferson City won the junior-varsity match 2-0.
