| March 30 News Tribune Despite playing hurt, Sanders makes difference for Lady Jays By Tom Rackers Even at less than 100 percent, Kelsey Sanders still can make a big difference. “She's got a great scoring touch,” Lady Jays coach Matt Stacey said after Sanders tallied what proved to be the game-winner in a 3-1 decision Saturday afternoon over the Pembroke Hill Lady Raiders at the 179 Soccer Park. Sanders, a senior, missed a lot of time at the end of the basketball season with an injured ankle and that has carried over into soccer. “It's still not 100 percent, but she's out there competing,” Stacey said. “That goal should be a real confidence booster.” Stacey has been lamenting the Lady Jays' inability to take advantage of good scoring chances in the early going this season. But they scored twice in the first five minutes Saturday. Kara Steiner got the Lady Jays on the board four minutes into the contest, a minute before Sanders scored to make it 2-0. The Lady Raiders cut the deficit in half with about 16 minutes to play before intermission on a free kick. Kinsey Shouse got the Lady Jays' final goal on a free kick about eight minutes into the second half. That came after an earlier free kick by Shouse rattled off the crossbar. The Lady Jays (3-2) will host Moberly on Tuesday and Quincy (Ill.) on Thursday. There was no junior varsity game Saturday. |
