Lady Jays take 1-0 victory over Moberly

It's all about the result.

“Good teams have to learn how to win 1-0,” Lady Jays coach Matt Stacey said after Jefferson City scored the lone goal of Wednesday night's game against the Moberly Lady Spartans at the 179 Soccer Park.

“If we can do that all year, that's great. We'll take it.”

Not that Stacey and the Lady Jays wouldn't be happy with a bigger margin of victory.

“We've won some pretty good games this season and we're winning on some great shots,” Stacey said. “The goal we had was a great shot.

“But eventually, we're going to have to pick up some goals on easy chances. You can only win games for so long on tough shots.”

Kelsey Sanders scored on that “tough shot” midway through the first half, settling a ball near the Moberly net before firing a high shot past the Moberly goalkeeper.

“I didn't think that would be the only one,” Stacey said.

The Lady Jays did a lot of things right on the offensive end in the opening half, but just couldn't find the back of the net for another score.

“I thought we moved the ball really well,” Stacey said. “It was as good as we've moved it all season. But we were getting breakdowns in front of the net and we need some consistency when we get it down there.”

Stacey has implemented a few new wrinkles in the Lady Jays' offensive attack and he believes that is part of the reason for the lack of consistency.

“I think that inexperience is understandably showing up in games,” Stacey said.

On the defensive end, with the exception of a couple of corner kicks, the Lady Jays kept the Lady Spartans away from the goal.

“I'm proud of that,” Stacey said. “We were a little confused for a time in the game, but we were able to settle things down and keep them off the board.”

Mariah McClain earned the shutout in goal for the Lady Jays (4-2), who are scheduled to host Quincy on Thursday. The JV game will start at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest around 6:15 p.m.

The Lady Jays won the JV game 2-0. Cornine Mullarkey and Taylor Woodland scored the goals, while Kathlene Twenter had an assist. Lindsey Clark was in goal in the shutout for Jefferson City (2-0).
