Columbia Tribune 4/15, Parker Eshelman photo -- Jefferson City goalie Mariah McClain, left, punches the ball away from Hickman’s Katie LaRue in the second half of the Jays’ 1-0 victory last night. The Kewpies haven’t scored a goal in four straight games.

It’s been so long since the Hickman girls soccer team scored that some of the Kewpies’ forwards don’t remember when it last happened.

Sophomore Katie LaRue and senior Amanda Sudduth laughed when asked about their team’s most recent goal after last night’s 1-0 loss to Jefferson City at Hickman Field. "Sad," LaRue said.   Added Sudduth: "It might have been Moberly."

Hickman defeated Moberly 3-1 on March 28. Eight days later, Liz Gayer scored in the 54th minute against Francis Howell Central. Since then, the Kewpies have been shut out by Rock Bridge, Lee’s Summit West, Lee’s Summit and the Jays. Hickman hasn’t scored in 346 minutes, 23 seconds.

Even worse, Hickman (2-8-2) hasn’t won since its victory at Moberly. The Kewpies have lost seven games in a row.

For much of the first half, Hickman appeared to be a soft touch or a strong pass away from a good scoring chance. In the 30th minute, it created one.

Hickman goalkeeper Kelsey Mescher hit a long, wind-aided punt, and Sudduth flicked the ball on with her head. That sprung LaRue on a breakaway.

LaRue, who was playing her first full game since suffering a hip pointer injury against Nerinx Hall on April 5, dribbled in on Jefferson City goalkeeper Mariah McClain and cut to the left. McClain dived and LaRue attempted to dribble around her, but she kicked the ball into McClain.

The Kewpies couldn’t generate another scoring chance of that caliber the remainder of the game.

With about five minutes left in the match, Katie Evers slide-tackled the ball away from Liz Gayer in the box. Gayer was slow to get up and was helped off the field. She fell hard on her hip after the collision. Hickman Coach Jeff Wallace said he said he won’t know the extent of the injury until today.

Hickman crossed the ball across the top of the box with less than two minutes to play. LaRue was there but tumbled over before she could play the ball. No foul was called.

In an effort to jump-start its offense, the Hickman coaches have staggered their forwards and added an offensive midfielder to the lineup. The moves have helped, according to LaRue and Sudduth. Now the team needs to work on possessing the ball and making better runs, Wallace said.

"We’re gonna just work a little bit more this next week on not running away from the ball so much," he said.

The anemic offense has ratcheted up the pressure on the defense. "I feel like it’s on my shoulders sometimes, but I feel like my defense is with me," Mescher said.

Jefferson City (5-5-1) broke through Hickman’s back line in the 49th minute. Kelsey Sanders played the ball ahead to Molly Cowley, and she got around a Hickman defender at the top of the penalty box. With just Mescher to beat, Cowley fired far post to score the winner.

"We were lucky that we put a good 15 minutes together here, a good 15 minutes together there to make sure that we capitalized on the situation," Jays Coach Matt Stacey said.
Lackluster Hickman soccer falls to Jefferson City

COLUMBIA — The Hickman girls soccer team can’t seem to catch a break.

A controversial no-call in the penalty box in the final minutes kept the Kewpies off the scoreboard again. Hickman fell 1-0 to the visiting Jefferson City Lady Jays on Tuesday night. With Hickman (2-8-2) desperately scrambling for a goal in the waning minutes, senior forward Amanda Sudduth streaked down the right wing and sent a perfect low-lying cross through the box to sophomore Katie LaRue. LaRue would have had an open shot if she wasn’t tripped up. The referee kept the whistle in his pocket, dashing the hopes of the Kewpie faithful.

“It’s frustrating,” senior goalie Kelsey Mescher said. “I keep feeling we are getting better and better but the scores are not showing it.”

Jefferson City scored on an impressive individual effort from sophomore forward Molly Cowley in the 49th minute. After receiving the ball on the right wing, Cowley made a quick cut move through the Hickman defense and capped it off by burying a left-footed shot into the lower right-hand corner.

“They were doing a good job of finding some front-runners who had some space,” Hickman coach Jeff Wallace said. “We could have done a better job of defending on that goal.”
